Short story of the poem "The Ball"

The poem is about a boy who loses his ball. The poet, in his poem, talks about a boy whose ball slips from his hands and falls into a nearby water body. The poet who witnesses this, begins to ponder about the boy and his reaction to losing his favorite ball.

The boy longingly looks at his ball and trembles with fear and sorrow. His sadness on losing his favorite ball keeps him standing near the harbor for hours, staring at the ball.

The poet thinks of two options- either to console him by assuring the possibility of a new ball could or to give him some money to buy another ball. But he stops himself from doing either of those. He contemplates that the money might buy him a new ball but will not buy the memories attached to the lost ball. He says that it is time that the boy learns his responsibilities.

The poet hopes that it is time that the boy learns the toughest lesson of his life- the lesson of accepting the harsh realities of life, accepting the loss of our loved ones and our belongings that were the dearest to us.
