The cell membrane acts as the barrier between the cell contents and the external environment.

  • The cell membrane is a semi-permeable living membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of each living cell.
  • The cell membrane is made up of three layers, out of which the outer and inner layers are made of proteins and the middle layer is made up of lipids or fats.
  • It forms the shape of the cell and protects the organism.
  • Along with controlling the action of intercellular diffusion and osmosis, it also helps in the formation of various structures.
  • Many denied the existence of a cell membrane in the late 19th century.
  • In 1890, an update to cell theory stated that cell membranes existed, but were only secondary structures.
  • It was not until later studies with osmosis and permeability that cell membranes gained more recognition.
