The decimal number system uses base ten.

Other systems (such as hexadecimal, or dozenal, or octal, or binary) use a base other than ten.

In any of these number systems, a whole number is written as a string of digits, from left to right, where the last digit (on the right end, if there is no “radix-point”) represents the number of units or “ones” (from zero to nine).

For a decimal number, the next digit (to the left)tells how many tens there are, while the next tells how many hundreds, then how many thousands, etc.

Each time you go (left) to the next-higher column, the value for that place is ten times as large in the decimal system because the “base” is ten.
