The following characteristics unify all cells regardless of their function and diversity.

  • 1: All cells have a phospholipid bilayer that isolates their system to the environment. With the cell membrane they would leak out their contents and die asap!

  • 2: All cells arise from pre existing cells. Cells do not form in nature spontaneously. They are born from a parent cell only. Maybe, few billion years ago, the first proto cell was formed spontaneously but that was it. It is still a theory.

  • 3: All cells have cytoplasm which can be compared to the blood of mammals etc. The cytoplasm carries all the nutrients, organelles when present and maintains the osmotic balance.

  • 4: All cells derive their ATP by converting external nutrients or sunlight.

  • 5: All cells carry genetic material at some point in their life cycle.

  • 6: Cells have an electrochemical gradient across their cellular membranes.
