Berlin West Africa Conference also known as Berlin Conference was held Berlin in which the major European nations met to decide all questions related with the Congo River basin in Central Africa.
The conference was proposed by Portugal in pursuance of its special claim to control of the Congo estuary. The general act of the conference declared the Congo River basin to be neutral ; guaranteed freedom for trade and shipping for all states in the basin; forbade slave trading; and rejected Portugal’s claims to the Congo River estuary. The General Act of the Berlin Conference, is often viewed as the formalization of the “Scramble for Africa.” The European powers divided Africa up between themselves, leading to creation of artificial states that lacked any cultural or linguist or ethnic coherence.
