Answer:

The correct answer is Option D SOCl₂

Explanation:

  • The best reagent used for the conversion of ethyl alcohol into ethyl chloride was SOCl₂.
  • SOCl₂ is also known as Thionyl chloride. It is an organic compound . It has a unpleasant acrid odor and is colorless and volatile compound.
  • For the preparation of thionyl chloride, In liquid sulfur monochloride, sulfur trioxide and chlorine was heeled. The temperature is maintained of about 105 to 110°C. In this the liquid sulfur monochloride contains the thionyl chloride.
  • For the conversion of ethyl alcohol into ethyl chloride thionyl chloride was used and the reaction was don in the presence of pyridine.

Chemical Reaction:

C₂H₅OH + SOCl₂   --------------------> C₂H₅Cl + SO₂ +HCl

  • During this reaction, the OH group in the ethanol was replaced with Cl (chloride) and thus ethyl chloride is formed.
  • Sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride was formed along with ethyl chloride.

Answer: The best reagent used for the conversion of ethyl alcohol into ethyl chloride SOCl₂
