In the story, 'How I Taught My Grandmother to Read', the author tells that her grandmother did not how to read and write Kannada. The author used to read out for her. So when the author went to another place for some days her grandmother felt helpless as she could not read the next episode of the serial story Kashi Yatra. After returning from the trip the author taught her Kannada. It was a joy to see her read on her own and be self reliant. The author's grandmother had done so much for her, she showed her gratitude by giving her the best gift -the ability to read on her own. So the best way to thank an illiterate person is to make him or her literate.
