While many men believe that the ‘days of youth’ are the best years of a man’s life, Osbert Sitwell is in disagreement with this belief. He stated that childhood games and youthful actions have no value in later life. It is only the mature, old age that gives man, worldly experience and wisdom in life.

This is not true, as it is man’s childhood and experience as youth, that equips him to progress in life and be a mature, wise man in later life. Without these experiences, he will stay dull and morose.

Sir Francis Osbert Sitwell (1892 – 1969) was an English writer and poet who often wrote articles and poetry of controversial nature.

The “Best years of my life” poem is written by the famous British poet Sir Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell.

In this poem, the poet tries to explain that his childhood days were not best as the games he played them had never helped him to have any significance in life in the later years.

According to him, the old days are much relevant to understand the significance of life experiencing the worldly matters with a meaning.
