Explanation: The Government of India started a program under the name Bharat Nirman Yojna on 16th December 2005 to provide basic amenities to the rural areas.The plan was launched with a time bound plan which was to be implemented between the period of 2005-2009. The amount set aside for this scheme was to the tune of Rs 174000 crore.The Ministry of Rural Development was given the charge of this yojna.
It mainly focused on issues like Telephone connections, Roads, Water supply,Irrigation, Housing and Electrification in the rural areas.
The main purpose of this plan were as follows.
TELEPHONE: The plan suggested to connect 40% of the rural area with telephone by the year 2014 and cover the two and half lakhs Panchayats with broadband connectivity by 2012.
ROAD: The yojna put forward the idea of constructing all weather roads by 2012 with a view to connect all the villages of India with a minimum population of 500 and 250 for tribal or hilly areas.
WATER: To provide safe drinking water by 2012 to the under developed areas in the country.
IRRIGATION: The yojna intended to bring an additional irrigational land to the tune of one crore hectare by the year 2012.
HOUSING: The scheme aimed at providing the poor people with housing facilities. The plan was to initially construct 60 lakh additional houses to be for the poor within 2009, but was later revised to a figure of 1.2 crore with the extended date line of 2014.
ELECTRICITY: To bring electricity to each village by 2012.
