Sulphur dioxide is a temporary bleaching agent, unlike Chlorine, which is a permanent bleaching agent! This is because the mechanism forbleaching is different: SO2-Reduction => TEMPORARY. Cl2-Oxidation =>PERMANENT.

Answer:

Explanation:

SO2 acts as a reducing agent and bleaches the substance by reduction, but when the substance again comes in contact with the atmosphere, it readily gets oxidised to the coloured compound.Hence the action of SO2 is temporary. Where as O3 is an oxidising agent and on oxidation gives O2 and nascent oxygen. the nascent oxygen removes the colour permanently.
