Vertical or upright position is the answer.

  • During blood preservation in refrigerators, the blood container is kept in vertical or upright position so that the red blood cells settle down.
  • Due to gravity, the red blood cells settle to the bottom of the container; Also, RBC is denser than plasma. This is helpful in the process of plasma separation.
  • Also, this process is essential to check the freshness of blood; If haemolysis occurs, then the blood should be discarded and not to be stored.

The 'blood' after collection is kept into a 'refrigerator' in an "upright position" till the 'red cells' settle down.

EXPLANATION:

The red blood cells from stacks settle down faster, due to increased density. Due to gravitational force the RBC settle down in bottom of the container being denser in nature than plasma. This process takes up to 20 minutes.  Hence the upright position of blood at appropriate temperature results in faster settling of RBC.
