"The Blue Bead" written by Norah Burke, is a story of a twelve-year-old poor girl; Sibia.
I agree that the story stresses on courage of the poor young girl rather than just the fulfillment of her tiny wishes. This could even be the intention of the author in showing the young girl's bravery and humanity.
The opening of the story describes a river full of crocodiles on the village side.
Like any other young girl, Sibia had tiny wishes like wanting to own stuff like colored beads to sew various necklaces and bracelets. But her family could not afford to fulfill her tiny wishes. The family worked very hard to acquire the basic need of their lives.
The only thing Sibia could do was to fantasize about having her own colored beads.
Despite of being in such a poor state, her instincts never gave up on qualities like bravery and humanity. When a woman gets attacked by a crocodile, Sibia uses her hayfork to wedge the crocodile and save the life of the woman.
She finds something very precious to her when she heads back to the river to collect her hayfork. Her heart overwhelms when she finds the beautiful blue bead.
Even though Sibia receives a reward indirectly for her good deed, the essence of the story lies in the bravery and humanity of the twelve-year-old poor girl.
