The following chemical reaction takes place:
Zn + CuSO₄ ---------> ZnSO₄ + Cu
The blue colour of the solution is due to the presence of Copper sulphate (CuSO₄);
As the reaction proceeds the Copper from CuSO₄ is slowly displaced by Zinc thus forming ZnSO₄ which is colourless, so the blue colour disappears slowly and a colourless solution starts forming.
