The boiling points of some elements are given below:
(a) Argon -186°C
(b) Nitrogen - 196°C
(c) Oxygen - 183°C
(d) Xenon - 108°C
A mixture of the above gases at -210°C was heated by 20°C. Which of the element will still be in the liquid state? (a) Oxygen only
(b) Argon, oxygen and xenon

(c) Argon, nitrogen and xenon

Option (b) should be the correct option

Explanation:

  • Boiling point for an element is the temperature at which the liquid starts boiling or starts to convert from liquid to vapour state.
  • Below the boiling point of the substance , the substance will be in liquid state and above the boiling point , it will get converted to apout state.

In this case , when the mixture at -210°C is heated by 20°C , the temperature now becomes -190°C. Therefore , Argon , oxygen and xenon will be at a temperature different than this temperature according to the gien boiling points. Hence , they will remain in liquid state.

Nitrogen on the other hand , has a lower boiling point than others and will tend to boil faster and change into vapour state .
