This is the story of love and friendship between an animal and a human being. One day the author found a bear cub in a field. He took it home and presented it to his wife. The bear and the author’s wife developed a great love for each other. When the bear grew up, it was sent to the zoo at Mysore. She became very sad. After three months, she visited the zoo. The bear, whose name was Baba, at once recognized her and danced with happiness. She came back. But she could not live without the bear. So she got the permission of the zoo superintendent to get the bear back. A special place was made at home for the grown-up bear. Now both the bear and the writer’s wife were happy. The story shows that animals too have as much love and affection as human beings have.

In this story, the narrator describes about an emotional bond shared by his wide and their pet bear Bruno. One day, in an accident, the narrator found the bear and presented it as a gift to his wife. His wife named the bear Bruno, and looked after it like a baby. She fed him milk through a baby bottle, and it slowly started eating many kinds of food items.
Bruno was a friendly bear, it ate anything and everything. One day, it mistakenly ate poison --- Barium Carbonate which was placed in the library to kill mouse & rats. It was under a fit of paralysis, the bear was taken to the vet. It was injected twice, and was finally revived. The bear started eating normally again. In another incident, Bruno drank a gallon of engine oil, but it did not have any ill effects.
As days passed, Bruno grew bigger. His name was turned into Baba. Baba learnt many new tricks. When ordered, "Baba, wrestle" or "Baba, box" It would tackle and overpower the opponent. When asked, "Baba, where's baby?" It would take a log of wood and would cradle it gently like a baby. Now Baba was big enough and it was dangerous for him to stay at home even though he was sweet and playful.
Their family members thought of sending Baba to the zoo, after convincing the narrators wife. The narrators wife had to agree, and she sent a letter to the zoo. The zoo in-charge agreed, and Baba was taken to Mysore in a huge cage. Everyone missed him but were also relieved as it wasn't comfortable to keep him at home. The narrators wife missed Baba terribly. She always wrote to the zoo in-charge about how Baba was. They replied that Baba was fine, but wouldn't eat much and was sad as her.
After few months has passed, the narrators wide convinced the narrator to take her to the zoo, to meet Baba. Everyone had predicted that the bear wouldn't recognize the narrators wife, but as in when the bear saw her, he stood on his two paws and shouted with happiness. The narrators wife spent 3 hours with him where she fed him with his favorite food and played with him. She got emotional when it was time to leave. She requested the zoo in-charge to take back Baba home, and he finally agreed.
Baba was put in a cage and was bought back home. He had a special island built for him where he got his belongings placed with a bed to sleep on, his stick and his piece of wood to play with. The narrators wife would pay a visit to Baba's island by swinging onto a rope tied to mango tree. She would make the big bear sit on her for hours and would pet him affectionately.
