HCl is a very strong acid.When the bones are kept in dilute hydrochloric acid, they become soft because the calcium present in the bones dissolves in HCl. A chemical reaction happens between calcium and dilute HCl which is as follows-
HCl + Ca ------> CaCl2 + H2
