He was also the first black and first democratic president of his country, South Africa. Nelson Mandela awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his anti-apartheid activism in 1993 for his efforts. He was married six times and has six children. Nelson Mandela died in 5 December, 2013.


The autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom" tells the story of Mandela's life. It is self written by him (Nelson Mandela) and published in 1994 by Little Brown and Corporation.

This book documents his early life, struggles, education and 27 years in prison owing to his pivotal role in the Apartheid movement.

He also dedicated his book to his six children. His book won the Alan Paton Award in 1995. It has also been published in several languages, including an Afrikaans translation by Antjie Krog.
