The old average = R/W = 12.4

From this R = 12.4W................. i)

The new average = 12.4 - 0.2 = 12.2

The new wickets = w + 5

The new average = R + 26 / w + 5 = 12.2

R + 26 = 12.2(w + 5)

R + 26 = 12.2W + 61

R = 12.2W + 6 - 26

R = 12.2W + 35……………ii)

We equate equation i and ii.

12.2W + 35 = 12.4W

35 = 12.4W - 12.2W

0.2W = 35

W = 35/0.2

W = 175

The number of wickets taken before the last run is 175 wickets.
