SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

The box plot shows the number of cousins students in Mr. Myer's class have. Which statement about the data must be true?

EVALUATION

From the above given figure we see that

Upper quartile = 9

Lower quartile = 4

Median = 7

Inter quartile range = 9 - 4 = 5

Lower quartile to median = 7 - 4 = 3

Upper quartile to median = 9 - 7 = 2

CHECKING FOR OPTION : 1

A. The spread from the lower quartile to the median is less than the spread from the median to the upper quartile.

So this option is not correct

CHECKING FOR OPTION : 2

The number of data values below the median

is greater than the number of data values

above the median.

So this option is not correct

CHECKING FOR OPTION : 3

The spread from the lower quartile to the median is greater than the spread from the median to the upper quartile.

So this option is correct

CHECKING FOR OPTION : 3

The number of data values below the median is less than the number of data values above the median.

So this option is not correct

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the correct option is

The spread from the lower quartile to the median is greater than the spread from the median to the upper quartile.

Given :  The box plot shows the number of cousins students in Mr. Myer's class have.

To Find :  Which statements about the data must be true

( ref attachment )

Solution:

Lower Quartile Q₁  = 4

Median = Q₂  = 7

Upper Quartile Q₃ = 9

Spread from lower Quartile to Median = 7 -4  = 3

Spread from Median to upper Quartile =  9 - 7 = 2

Spread from lower Quartile to Median  > Spread from Median to upper Quartile

option 3 is correct

Option 1 is just opposite

Number of data values before median and above median are always Equal  ( that what median is )

Hence option   2 and 4 are incorrect
