The boys Nicola and jacopo we're ophsns. Their father died during the war. Their house was destroyed and they somehow constructed a place to live through rubble. The attack by the Germans made their life worse. Therefore they hated Germans
Nicola and Jacopo grew hate to Germans because Germans were cause of all their sufferings. Their father was killed in the war which left them orphaned. Later their house was destroyed in a bomb which abandoned them and their sister and left them on streets. Thus they joined resistance movement against Germans. After the war was over,they discovered that their sister was suffering from TB of spine.
This forced the little innocent boys to do odd jobs and strive for their life.
