The brakes applied to a car produce an acceleration of 6 m s-2 in the opposite direction to the motion. If the car takes 3 s to stop after the application of brakes, calculate the distance it travels during this time. Also calculate the initial velocity of the car

Answer:

distance travelled 27m speed of car(initial)=18m/s²

Explanation:

Given:

Acceleration: -6m/s^2 ( taken negative acceleration because acceleration is taking place opposite the direction of motion)

Time taken by car to stop : 3 sec

Final Velocity of car : 0 m/s^2

By using 1st law of motion : v = u + at

0=u+(-6)(3)

0=u+(-18)

u=18m/s^2

Distance travelled by car after the break is applied : By using 2nd law of motion (s=ut+1/2at²)

s=18*3+1/2*(-6)*(3²)

s = 54+(-27)

s=27m
