the main act was the divide and rule.
in this act the British went and made a contract with the little kingdoms of the Hindustan and made them fight between themselves. after they had won the British broker the contract and betrayed the kingdom they were supporting by this they conquered almost whole of the Hindustan.
second on my opinion is that they would go to the kingdoms and would behave as a trader . after they were strongly bonded with the trade the British would again betray and would conquer the kingdom
