Robert Clive bribed Mir jafar, the commander-in-chief of Nawab's army, and also promised him to make him the Nawab of Bengal. He defeated the Nawab in the battle of Plassey in 1757 and captured Kolkata. The battle was preceded by the attack on British controlled Kolkata by Nawab siraj ud daulah and black hole massacre.
