The British used both the policy of outright war and administration measures to capture territories in India

Explanation:

Outright Wars

  • The British East India Company waged a strong war of non-intervention diplomacy and of assertion of former "subordinate rulers", i.e. of the incorporation of Indian territorier into the British govt. The Subsidiary Partnership Program was the "Non-Policy on Intervention" by Lord Wellesley, the former Governor General so as to expand  the British Empire.
  • The Indian king was to decide to grant a subsidy to the British to finance the British army under this scheme. The British would in turn defend these kings against their opponents, which allowed the British to expand hugely. This was a "loss of the sovereignty document" which declared that the State was not entitled to self defense, or maintain diplomatic relations, the use of foreign experts for settlement of disputes with its neighbours.
  • In 1853 Lord Dalhousie introduced the " Doctorine of Lapse Theory". The British conquered most of the Indian Princely states with this scheme. Under this policy, the British annexed Kingdoms that did not have a natural heir. The examples of kingdoms that were annexed by this proposal were Satara, Jhansi, Nagpur, and so on

Administration Measures

  • After the British got Bengal under control, they attempted to establish the administration by themselves. Nevertheless, British administration policy shifted after 1857, but never lost sight of its principal goals. This was meant to improve the prosperity of its possessions for Britain in India and to preserve and enhance British influence over India.
  • Around 1765 and 1772, during the time of the Dual Rule, Indian officials could work under the joint "control of the British Governor" as well as the British officials. The company abolished the dual administration in 1772 and administered Bengal directly with its own officials. The Pitt's India Act, 1784 for example, gave the British complete control over the company affairs  & its administration in India
  • The govt headed by the Governor General and four consultants in Bengal had jurisdiction over the Presidencies of Mumbai and Madras. The Regulatory Act of 1773 granted Parliament with the power to regulate political, military and financial relations in the company's territories of India
