The British introduced many policies to capture territories in India. Out of them the two famous policies were Doctrine of Lapse and Subsidary Alliance.

i) DOCTRINE OF LAPSE:

• Doctrine of Lapse was introduced by Lord Dalhousie in the year 1853.

• Most of the Indian Princely states were captured by British through this policy.

• According to this policy, the kingdom without any natural heir were annexed by the Britishers.

Satara,Jhansi,Nagpur etc were examples of kingdoms which were annexed under this policy.

ii) SUBSIDARY ALLIANCE:

• Subsidiary Alliance was another policy which was introduced by Lord Wellesley.

• According to this policy, the kingdom which sign this policy should accept the British troops into the kingdom.

Nizam of Hyderabad was first ruler who accepted this policy.

• Later kingdoms like Mysore, Tanjore etc came under the Subsidary Alliance.
