The Broken Pinion
by Hezekiah Butterworth
I walked through the woodland meadows,
Where sweet the thrushes sing;
And I found on a bed of mosses
A bird with a broken wing.
I healed its wound, and each morning
It sang its old sweet strain,
But the bird with a broken pinion
Never soared as high again.

I found a young life broken
By sin's seductive art;
And touched with a Christlike pity,
I took him to my heart.
He lived with a noble purpose
And struggled not in vain;
But the life that sin had stricken
Never soared as high again.

But the bird with a broken pinion
Kept another from the snare;
And the life that sin had stricken
Raised another from despair.
Each loss has its compensation,
There is healing for every pain;
But the bird with a broken pinion
Never soars as high again.

Answer:

1) By ‘renascent light’ the poet means the light which is reviving the glory of our country.

2) The period of the British Raj was like winter-cold and dreary and after it, independence will come like spring during which plants get new leaves and then they go on to bloom. Hence 'spring' stands for independence.

3) During the British Raj, the intellectuals had to bear the brunt of their repression. The song bird's bleeding pinion (pinion of hope of the intellectuals) was the result of it.

4) The period of sleep is a time of maximum inertia. The period of the British Raj is referred to as 'age-long sleep' because it was the period of great suppression resulting in inertia.

5) If the intellectuals were not suppressed they could have created an uprising in the country. Hence they were brutally suppressed. This was the cause of the broken wing of the song bird. ( The bird in the poem has been compared with the people ).

6) The poet felts sad when he came across the wounded bird.

The poets are very kind and soft-hearted person they feel everything to the death of their hearts. If a bird gets hurt a poet would feel bad for its pain and similarly when a tree cuts down the poet feels its pain just like a bleeding wound. He feels the bird's pain like an injured person.

7) By 'sin's seductive art' the poet means that it was sinful for the bird to have been hurt in this manner that it would never be able to fly again in its life. he feels very sad that the bird is wounded and is in pain. ( The bird in the poem has been compared with the people under British Raj ).
