The bulk modulus for an incompresssible liquid is infinite

Since the liquid is incompressible there is no change in volume.

When strain is small the ratio of the normal stress to the volume strain is called the bulk modulus of the material of the body.

B= normal stress/volume strain

=normal stress

change in volume/ original volume

since the liquid is an incompressible change in volume is zero.

B=normal stress/0=∞

Hence, the bulk modulus is infinite.

So even though mathematically the bulk modulus is infinite, in reality, all materials have a finite bulk modulus, even if a very large one.

Compute the bulk modulus of water from the following data: Initial volume = 100.0 litre, Pressure increase = 100.0 atm (1 atm = 1.013 × 105 Pa), Final volume = 100.5 litre. Compare the bulk modulus of water with that of air (at constant temperature). Explain in simple terms why the ratio is so large.
