The butterfly effect is a term associated with the chaos theory.

It explains how a small occurrence somewhere may have much larger effects somewhere else.

For example, in the poem For Want of a Nail, a single horseshoe nail is forgotten when a horse is being prepared for war. This leads to the leader of the kingdom to later be killed in war and lose his kingdom just because a single horseshoe nail was forgotten.

Hope that helped :)
