Canal Brings a New Way Of Life to Indian Desert
By William ClaiborneMay 20, 1984
Although still far from completed after 25 years of torturous construction, a 400-mile-long irrigation canal that slices through the desert of the western Indian state of Rajasthan already has begun to change dramatically the lives of normadic herdsmen in this hot and inhospitable wasteland.
Drawn by the uncommon sight of a 200-foot-wide channel of fresh water coursing through constantly shifting sand dunes and bleak, rocky flatlands of the Thar desert--the easternmost link of the great Afro-Asian desert chain stretching east from the Sahara--many of the nomads have ended their ceaseless search for water and fodder for their livestock and have begun eking out hardscrabble lives as farmers.
It is not easy going for most of them, as they toil at this time of the year in 115-degree temperatures and battle sand storms that not only regularly cover their crops but also fill up their painstakingly constructed watering trenches almost as soon as they have been dug out from the previous storm
