The ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville is the central figure in the novel. He is a frightening figure. He tries to frighten Mr. Otis and his family thrice but fails to do so.
He is a moody, weary and helpless gjost. He has been able to do some mischief but he fails to do any harm to the American Minister and his family. All his attempts fail to frighten the family. Thus he becomes helpless and pitiable.
He is a pathetic figure with repeated failures to frighten the new inhabitants.
