The Canterville Ghost, which is the ghost of Sir. Simon de Canterville, is the most important character of the novel. The story begins with the Otis family coming to live in the Canterville Chase. This modern American family, devoid of any kind of belief or fear in the supernatural, troubled him physically and emotionally. When all of his ghostly tricks failed, the ghost was sick in mind and body. It was then Virginia Otis found his secret abode accidentally.
The gentle and sympathetic nature of the girl encouraged the ghost to confide in her. A terrible story of the last 300 years was unfurled in front of her.
Sir Simon of Canerville could not love his wife because of the lady's plane looks, inability to handle his laundry well and her abominably bad cooking. So one day after she had spoiled his prized game meat by cooking it badly, he killed her. This, he considered a purely family matte,r which should not bother others. But the brothers of the good lady, his brother's-in-law thought otherwise and made it their concern. They proceeded to stretch him horribly by chaining him on to the floor of the secret chamber in the palace. He was left there to die of starving. To make the matters worse, they had placed a jug of water just beyond his reach, which persecuted the poor hungry man.
Thus he died. But nobody discovered his body or skeleton and no last rituals were conducted in order to let the soul rest in peace. As a result, poor Sir. Simon was condemned to haunt the living world for the last 300 years. He was not able sleep all these years and now he yearns to attain real and final death. That was only possible if a human being full of love will shed tears for him and beseech the angel of death to receive him to the eternal world. Knowing that Virginia was the 'golden girl' in the old prophesy written on the Library window, capable of delivering him from this hell, he requester her to do so. But he warned her that she would have to undergo some terrible experiences while she was at it.
Virginia, being a loving soul, decided to take up the strain to rescue him. she with the help of her family members conducted a grand funeral for him and buried his skeleton with all the necessary rituals in a place assigned for him in the garden. She placed a large cross made of white and pink almond blossoms. When the ceremony was over, the moon came out of the clouds and a nightingale began to sing and Virginia knew that all was well with Sir. Simon.
Thus 'The Cantervilel ghost' is all about the life, death and redeeming of the spirit of Sir. Simon de Canterville.
