The Maritime Safety Committee, at its sixty-fourth session (5 to 9 December 1994), approved the attached "On-board communication phrases for passenger care", intended to be included in the "Standard Marine Communication Phrases" which are under development and expected to be available after 1996.

2 The Committee, noting that the on-board communication phrases for passenger care is a new approach to standardize the verbal communication on board ships, decided that the attached phrases should be employed on an experimental basis.

Answer:

Attention please! Attention please! This is your captain with an important announcement. I repeat, this is your captain with an important announcement.

We have grounded / a minor flooding (in ... ) / a minor fire (in ... ).

There is no immediate danger to our passengers or the ship and there is no reason to be alarmed.

For safety reasons we request all passengers to go to their assembly stations on deck and wait there for further instructions.

Please follow the instructions given by the officers and crew.

The ship's fire fighting team / damage control team is fighting the fire / flooding.

We also have radio contact with other ships / radio coast stations.

The fire / flooding is under control.

As soon as I have further information I will make another announcement. I ask you kindly to remain calm. There is no danger at this time.
