The two carbons in these molecules are bonded by multiple bonds. Two in ethylene, three in acetylene. Together, these bonds are stronger than the single bond in ethane. However, the additional pi bonds each are weaker than the sigma bond! The electrons are much more accessible in a pi bond, and can readily be used in chemical reactions.
