Brief Explanation on the causes:-

1.POLITICAL CAUSES

Lord Dalhousie’s policy of annexation and the Doctrine of Lapse had made the Indian rulers angry and insecure. (Satara, Jhansi, Nagpur etc.) This policy created a feeling of insecurity and resentment amongst the Hindu rulers.

  • Rani of Jhansi, Lakshmi Bai was not allowed to adopt a son.
  • The pension of Nana Saheb (adopted son) was stopped after the death of Peshwa Baji Rao II.
  • The Company declared that successors of Bahadur Shah II would not enjoy the title of Raja and have to leave from the Red fort
  • Dalhousie annexed Oudh on the pretext of misgovernment.
  • English disbanded the armies of the annexed states and army men lost their livelihood
  • English thought themselves superior to the Indians and many were corrupt and inefficient.

              The Doctrine If Lapse

  • The British annexed the land of rulers after their death even if their legal heir ( Successor) were present.
  • The British annexed their land eventually.
  • They annexed the following states very soon.
  • They were Satara, Nagpur and Jhansi.
  • However the British had to face some resistance in by the Indians.

2. SOCIAL AND RELIGEOUS CAUSES

1. Introduced changes in the Indian Social system and the customs, which was considered as interference in their social set up.

Eg: Abolished sati, forbidding child marriage, allowing widow remarriage, banning girl child infanticide

2. Activities of Christian missionary and conversions by offering good job or position.

3. Introduction of railways with same compartment for all.

4. The government made teaching of Christianity in government schools and jails obligatory. They also confiscated land allotted to temples and the mosques which offended the religious sentiments.

5. Law passed in 1850 permitted to inherit ancestral property to converted people which encouraged conversion.

6. The spread of western culture and English education was resented .

3.ECONOMIC CAUSES

1. Economic exploitation of India and British carried off India’s wealth to England in several ways.

2. Abolished duties on British good and imposed heavy duty on Indian products which ruined Indian craft industries.

3. India market was converted in to a market for the supply of raw material to England.

4. Indian wealth (Princely states) was drained by paying high salaries to Company`s officials, heavy cost of maintaining company’s forces and Residents in  their areas.

4. MILITARY CAUSES

1. The Indian soldiers were discriminated.

2. Higher post in the army were reserved for the British.

3. Discrimination in the salaries of Indians and Europeans.

4. The Indian soldiers were also sent across the sea which was forbidden as per Hindu religious beliefs.

5. THE IMMEDIATE CAUSE OF THE REVOLT OF 1857

  • The company introduced the Enfield rifles in the Indian army.
  • Greased cartridges were to be used in these rifles.
  • The soldiers had to bite the end of the cartridges to use them.
  • The cartridges were said to be greased with the fat of animals.
  • Both Hindus and Muslims resented the use of these cartridges.
  • They regarded it as an attempt to pollute them and their religion.
  • This feeling produced a spark in the rising of the revolt of 1857.
  • The use of greased cartridges became the immediate cause of this national event.
