The cell membrane is a very important component of a cell how is damage to the cell membrane likely to impact the function of the cell?

Answer:

If the cell membrane ruptures or breakdown then the cell will not be able to exchange material from its surrounding by diffusion or osmosis. Thereafter the protoplasmic material will be disappeared and the cell will die.

Explanation:

Cell membrane acts as a semi permeable membrane. It controls the amount of substance going inside and coming outside the cell. It acts as a barrier and separates the cell from the external environment. Many toxic substance cannot enter the cell due to cell membrane. The integrity of the cell i.e the size and structure of tue cell is maintained by cell membrane.

Therefore damage to the cell membranes can lead to entry of toxic substance inside the cell which can destroy the nucleus and other cell organelles.

Damage to cell membrane can also lead to leakage of important cell constituents required for various metabolism of the cell.

There can also be imbalance of electrolyte concentration in the cell which could lead to damage of proteins and organelles of the cell.
