Explained Answer:
We all know that, Plants absorb water and minerals from the soil with the help of underground part, Root. This water and minerals are then transported to upper parts like Leaves. This is to perform photosynthesis
But, Most importantly, We must wonder!! that the first and foremost step of water conduction mechanism is absorption of water through roots.
- The water and minerals are absorbed through tiny hair like structures known as Root hair.
- The sap inside the root hairs is concentrated because takes up ions from the soil along with water actively.
- This makes a concentration gradient, That is difference in concentration inside and outside the cell.
- The cell membrane is semi-permeable, thus water moves inside the cell through osmosis.
- Osmosis is the movement of solvent from higher concentration to lower concentration (Or Low solute area ➝ High solute area)
- Hence, Water enters the roots though Osmosis.
- After that, The water forms steady columns because of Cohesive force between the molecules and transported to upper parts through xylem.
☯️ Refer to the attachment....
The solutes inside the root hair makes it more concentrated as compared to surrounding. The water in the soil is more than the cell. So, we can the root hair is dipped in an Hypotonic solution. So, By endoosmosis, water will enter the root hair cell.
