The cells around stomata are called gaurd cells because by opening and closing stomata, they facilitate gas exchange for photosynthesis and help minimize water loss.

- Certain number of specialised cells are named after the function they perform like protective cells, guard cells, storage cells etc.
- Guard cells are called so as they guard or protect the opening through which gaseous exchanges take place.
- They also control and time the opening and closing depending on pressure, availability and temperature.
- Thus guard cells are nothing more than specialised cells that guard and control gaseous openings.
