Step-by-step explanation:

area of the Central hall of a school

18m \times 12.5m = 225m {}^{2}

the carpet laid on the floor leaving a strip of 0.5 m (50 cm) width from the walls uncovered is

18m -0.5m - 0.5m = 17m

area of the carpet covered is

12.5 m\times 17m = 212.5m {}^{2}

area of the uncovered portion of the floor is

225m {}^{2}  - 212.5m {}^{2}  = 12.5m {}^{2}
