The distribution of power between the Centre and State follows the pattern of power distribution according to the Government of India Act of 1935.

The Centre gets predominance over State legislatures and State assemblies in distribution of legislative powers. Legislative powers cannot conflict with fundamental rights.

Distribution of legislative powers are covered under 3 major heads (under the VII Schedule to the Indian Constitution). They are the Union list (defence, banking, foreign affairs etc.), the State list (health, agriculture, forest etc.) and Concurrent list (both Centre and State governments have power of legislation).
