Given :  The Chandlers are moving across the country.

Mr. Chandler leaves 3.5 hours before Mrs. Chandler.

he averages 45mph and she averages 70mph,

To Find : how many hours will it take Mrs. Chandler to catch up to Mr. Chandler?

Solution:

Distance = Speed x time

Let say T hours after Mrs. Chandler.  catch up Mr. Chandler.

Then Distance covered by Mrs. Chandler.   = 70 * T

Mr. Chandler travelled 3.5 hrs extra

so Distance covered by Mr. Chandler.   = 45 * (T + 3.5)

Equating both distances

=>  70 * T = 45 * (T + 3.5)

=> 70 T = 45 T + 45 * 3.5

=> 25 T = 45 * 3.5

=>  T = 9 * 0.7

=> T = 6.3

After 6.3 hrs  or 6 hrs 18  mins Mrs. Chandler to catch up to Mr. Chandler
