Antonio is the title character in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. An influential, powerful and wealthy nobleman of Venice, he is a middle-aged man and a merchant by trade who has his financial interests tied up in overseas shipments when the play begins.

Antonio is a royal merchant and a capable businessman . He is the 'MERCHANT' as defined in the title of the play i.e. "The Merchant of Venice".

Antonio has been seen to be in a melancholic condition . The reason is not classified throughtout the play . Antonio is a caring and generous character who loves Bassanio dearly and is ready to do anything for him . He signs the hazardous bond of Shylock for the sake of Bassanio .

He lends money to people without charging any interest and thus , saves the people from Shylock's high rates of interest . He is a generous and kind man with a big heart for people .

He is a Christian and is intolerant towards other religion . He particularly hates Shylock for being a Jew as well as he hates his behaviour of charging interest on the money he lends . He spats on the gaberdine of Shylock . He curses Shylock publicaly in Venice among the merchants .
