chawls in Bombay were multistoried structures and each chawal was divided into smaller one room tenements which had no privste toilets.many families could reside at a time in a chawls.according to 1901 calculation reported that the mass of island's population or 80% of total reside in chawls of one room and the average number of occupants lies between 4 and 5 lakhs. high rent forced them to share home either with relatives or caste fellow .thehouse being small streets and neighbourhoods were used for variety of activities such as washing cooking etc.

liquor shops and akharas were built in empty spaces.streets were alao used for different type of activities.mabicians, monkey plasyers or acrobats used to perform in open space of chawls.simply chawls were the place for exchange of news, jobs, roits and demonstration.
