Concept introduction

The renin-angiotensin system, sometimes referred to as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), is a hormonal system that controls blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance, and systemic vascular resistance. Juxtaglomerular cells in the kidneys transform the blood-borne precursor prorenin, which is already present, into renin and release it into the circulation when renal blood flow is lowered. The subsequent transformation of the liver's secreted angiotensinogen into the decapeptide known as angiotensin I occurs thanks to plasma renin. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is located on the surface of vascular endothelial cells, particularly those in the lungs, and converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II (an octapeptide).  In between one and two minutes, angiotensin II has a short half-life.
