The chemical equation for the formation of rust is:

Iron + Water + Oxygen = Rust

i.e. 4 Fe(s) + 6 H2O(l) + 3 O2(g) → 4 Fe(OH)3(s)

Then Fe(OH)3 dehydrates to produce Fe2O3.nH2O(s).

Rust is actually an extremely slow burning reaction. The oxygen in the air reacts with the iron itself. Since Fe has 3 free electrons and O has 2, we end up with Fe2O3. Formation of rustoccurs when the iron is exposed longer time to the water in presence of sun and air or in absence of sun forms ruston iron.
Thereby, the chemical formula for rust is Fe2O3.nH2O.
