The chemical formula of rust is Fe2O3.

When iron is kept exposed to the open air, it reacts chemically with the moisture and forms hydrated ferric oxide, referred to as rust, a compound that is chemically different from that of original iron.

This reaction is a chemical change as by no means the original iron can be obtained from rust, hence the process is irreversible too.
