The chemical formula of sodium chloride is NaCl, and the chemical formula of zinc chloride is ZnCl2. Why is this so? Zinc always gives 2 electrons ( because only then it will have a stable octet configuration) whereas sodium always gives 1 electron. When 1 atom of sodium loses 1 electron, one atom of chlorine gains it.
