The chemical reaction between hydrogen and chlorine is a hydrochloric reaction.

Cl2 --UV--> 2Cl* where Cl* is the chlorine free radical.

H2 + Cl* --> H2Cl H2Cl is an unstable intermediate.

H2Cl --: HCl + H* A hydrogen free radical is produced along with HCl.

H* + Cl* --> HCl The hydrogen free radical reacts with another chlorine free radical to make the second HCl.

H2 + Cl2 --> 2HCl Is the the overall reaction.
