The story depicts decadent royalty of Central North India. It is set around the life of the last independently ruling Nawab (noble) Wajid Ali Shah and concludes with the British annexation of the Nawab's kingdom of Awadh in 1856. The two main characters are the aristocrats Mirza Sajjad Ali and Mir Raushan Ali who are deeply immersed into playing chess. Their desire for the game destroys the competency of the characters, and makes them irresponsible in their duties towards their families and society. They derive immense pleasure in developing chess strategies and ignore the real life invasion by the British. Their city Lucknow falls to British attackers as they are busy playing a game of chess.

Summary of 'The Chess Players' by Munshi Premchand

Explanation:

'The Chess Players'(1977) is a masterpiece of the great novelist Premchand depicting the reign of Wajid Ali Shah in Lucknow. This city, steeped in indulgence and luxury, is void of political-social consciousness. The whole society is involved in this indulgence.

The main characters of this story are Mirza Sajjad Ali and Mir Roshan Ali. Both are vassals of Wajidali Shah. They have no concern for the basic necessities of life. The two are close friends and playing chess is their main business. Both of them are ill-equipped, servants and servants, breakfast-food, betel-tobacco, etc. are available from time to time.

One day - Mirza Sajjad Ali's wife gets sick. She repeatedly sends the servant to get some medicine from Mirza Hakim, but Mirza is immersed in chess. Every moment they feel that the next bet is theirs. Finally, being fed up, Mirza's Begum tells them both of them. The whole game throws it out of the deodorant. The result is that the chess game now arises from Mirza and sits at Mir's door.

In the beginning, Mir Sahab's wife does not say anything, but when the matter starts to move forward, then she tries a trick to beat these two players. As was always the case, the two friends were lost in the game of chess that at the same time an officer of the Badshahi army stood up, asking the name of Mir Saheb. Mir Saheb's senses flew as soon as he saw him.

He is very robbed of the servants of the royal officer Mir Saheb, and after hearing of Mir's absence, talks about coming the next day. Thus ends this spectacle. Both friends are worried, what solution can be found out.

Mir and Mirza were also not small players. He too did a great job. Both friends once again considered their next stop by relocation. There will be neither will there be any meeting. Here Begum became free, and Mir was careless. The new place was a desert mosque on the banks of the Gomti, far from the city. There was absolutely no movement of people there.

Took together important items like hookah, chillum carpets etc. This went on for a few days. One day, suddenly Mir Saheb saw that the English army was moving along the banks of Gomti. He told this thing in a hurry to Mirza. Mirza said - you save your trick. The British are coming and let them come. Mir said there is also artillery. Mirza saheb said- give this hoax to someone else. Thus again both were lost in the game.

Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was imprisoned in some time. On the same route, the British army was returning victoriously. The whole city was shamelessly watching the spectacle. Such a great Nawab of Awadh was silently bowing his head. Both Mir and Roshan were vassals of this Nawab. They should put their lives in defense of the Nawab.

But unfortunately, he betted on life, but he definitely put it on chess. After a while, both these friends got entangled in the game. The matter reached the family and the REC. The abusive language started happening. Both held daggers and swords. Both took out swords and gave each other. Both came to an end. Alas! This death would have happened in favor of Nawab Wajidali and in the opposition of the British Army! But this did not happen.
