ABSTRACT

Many psychophysical models propose chi‐square random variables for the sensory evidence. This is true for the energy‐detection model when Gaussian noise processes are being discriminated. Parametric equations for the chi‐square receiver operating characteristic (ROC) are presented and then the index Ac, equal to the area under the chi‐square ROC, is determined. The index Ac is shown to follow the incomplete beta distribution with parameters a=b=ν/2 and x=1/(k+1), where k=σ2n/σ2sn and ν is the number of degrees of freedom of the noise process.
