Humans have 46 chromosomes. However, an essential step in the process of sexual reproduction is gamete formation. The gametes contain only 23 chromosomes. During fertilization, when 2 gametes fuse, the number of chromosomes is restored back to 46. Hence, the chromosome number of the sexually reproducing parents and their offsprings are the same.
